For Noora Sulaibeekh, performance is paramount.
As the general counsel of Batelco, the leading telecommunications provider in Bahrain, Sulaibeekh consistently measures her team’s performance and looks for ways to improve their results.
“It is very important for us to show how we are improving and pushing ourselves,” she said. “So if we started to see our average response time for a matter is five days, OK, how can we make it to three, and push ourselves.”
Xakia's Legal Operations Health Check
One primary resource on this quest: Xakia’s Legal Operations Health Check. Available until June 30, this free online tool empowers lawyers like Sulaibeekh to evaluate the health of their in-house legal departments and plan operational improvements.
The survey, which takes 20 to 30 minutes to complete, comprises 100 quick questions that address 10 major categories, including strategic planning, communications, technology tools and more. It is based upon recommendations from industry stalwarts such as the Corporate Legal Operations Consortium and the Association of Corporate Counsel, as well as best practices used by Xakia’s in-house clients worldwide.
After completing the Health Check, participants receive their overall health scores, as well as scores for each category; benchmarks for Legal Departments of similar size and industry; and recommended priorities and resources.
Sulaibeekh described the Health Check as an “eye-opener” when she first completed it in June 2019.
“Some areas I felt happy and proud,” she said. “And some areas, oh no, we don’t have it. It made me think of things to look at that I was not looking at.”
Among them, she said, was a way to collect data on her legal team’s response times. She implemented that, along with a few other initiatives, and retook the Health Check this month, one year later.
The result
A 12 percent increase in her Legal Department’s overall health score. And, thanks to her, a new data collection process, reliable metrics, faster turnaround times and a happy CEO.
